DOCUMENTARY SUPER SIZE ME




Task 1


Read the text and fill in the gaps after watching the first five minutes of the documentary

Task 2

In groups (4 students) discuss the following questions. Support your opinion and make notes.

  2. What influence does McDonald’s have in Spain? Is it very popular? Does it influence our diet?
  3. In America some people are suing fast food restaurants. Where does personal responsibility start and corporate responsibility stop?
  4. The title of the film is Super Size Me. What does it refer to?
  5. What will the specific topic of the film be?
After a short while, when the teacher notices that the groups are done with their work, the students report and a lively discussion will likely evolve.

3) The teacher introduces the students with Task 3. They should be given a brief amount of time to read through the instructions and the task. Then the teacher shows the second section of the documentary (minutes 51 to 57).

Watch minutes 51 to 57 of the documentary. Answer the questions. Use short answers only.

    • Who prepares your meals?
  2. In your opinion, what is a healthy way of eating ? (consider the type of food, frequency of eating, time of eating, variety of food, etc.)
  3. Are the eating habits of Slovenians changing? In what way?
  4. Is fast food going to influence our eating habits the same way as it has many Americans?
Students report after discussing the questions in groups.

Post-listening Activities

At home students write responses to the following:
  • How is the issue of providing food for high school students taken care of in your country? 
  • In the next lesson, the students freely report on what they have written.

BRAIN AND INTELLIGENCE

In this lesson we will study brain anatomy and funcion.

But first, we are going to watch a video funny video on how functional areas of the brain were discovered. The video is entitled The great brain debate



After this introduction we are ready to study brain anatomy.

You can do it yourself using the 3-D BRAIN ANATOMY TOOL,  reading the contents of the McGill online book or regarding this interactive activity of Bitesize from the BBC. The second resource it is interesting because you can find three levels of difficulty on the Nervous System.

  • Answer these online activities to remember the most important topics about the nervous system.


Multiple intelligences

The brain is the house of intelligence... During the first decades of past century, intelligence was used to be mesured using a IQ test. Nowadays, intelligence is considered a much more complex issue, especially since the develpment of the multiple intelligences hypothesis by Howard Gardner in 1983. If you have time, see how Dr. Gardner explain his own hypothesis in the TV show Redes. You can quantify your different intelligences having this test develped by researchers at Birmingham University.





An interesting approach in the intelligence field has been propossed by Dr. Adrian Owen. His resarch team is triying to measure intelligence using a online test created to discover your intelligence Strengths.

Ebola virus disease

The Ebola virus has been frightening us since the last outbreak took place several months ago...

In order to know something more about Ebola virus disease we are going to use some different resources

A quick way to introduce yourself to the basic facts about  Ebola is by having a look at this BBC short video.

But, in my opinion, this video from TED-Ed summarizes pretty good the state of the art about the 2014 Ebola outbreak.

If you have more time, it would be better if you watch the documentary

and answer this questionnaire to see if you got the main ideas about the disease. Then, you can check your answers.
