In this lesson we will study brain anatomy and funcion.
But first, we are going to watch a video funny video on how functional areas of the brain were discovered. The video is entitled The great brain debate
After this introduction we are ready to study brain anatomy.
You can do it yourself using the 3-D BRAIN ANATOMY TOOL, reading the contents of the McGill online book or regarding thisinteractive activity of Bitesize from the BBC. The second resource it is interesting because you can find three levels of difficulty on the Nervous System.
There are really dificult questions in this quiz... only for advanced learners!!!
Multiple intelligences
The brain is the house of intelligence... During the first decades of past century, intelligence was used to be mesured using a IQ test. Nowadays, intelligence is considered a much more complex issue, especially since the develpment of the multiple intelligences hypothesis by Howard Gardner in 1983. If you have time, see how Dr. Gardner explain his own hypothesis in the TV show Redes. You can quantify your different intelligences having this test develped by researchers at Birmingham University.
An interesting approach in the intelligence field has been propossed by Dr. Adrian Owen. His resarch team is triying to measure intelligence using a online test created to discover your intelligence Strengths.

A stem cell is…
A cell taken from an embryo that can become any kind of cell type in the body
A cell taken from your intestines that can become any kind of tissue in the body
A kind of cell that can only become other kinds of similar cells
Any kind of cell that is undifferentiated and can divide to make new cells
An undifferentiated cell is…
A kind of stem cell
A cell without characteristics specific to a kind of tissue
Another term for a tissue-specific stem cell
Another term for a pluripotent stem cell
Using stem cells to replace damaged bodily tissue is called…
Regenerative medicine
Cloning
Genetic engineering
Gene splicing
Stem cells can be classified in three categories..

Adult stem cells are…
Created from genetically-altered mature bodily cells
Created from embryos
Found in your body right now
All of the above
Pluripotent stem cells are different from tissue-specific adult stem cells in what way?
They are not available for use with humans
They cannot be used in treatments for adults
They can only become a few kinds of cells in the body
They can become any kind of cell type in the body
How are stem cells used to treat leukemia? What other diseases might be treatable in this way?
What is the source of embryos used for embryonic stem cell research? What would have been the outcome for these cells had they not been used for research?
How might induced pluripotent stem cells change How stem cell research is conducted?
